The snow on the high mountain passes and repairs we needed to make on our home before traveling back east gave us two days in the desert. We were able to warm up for the first time in weeks, where we didn’t wake to our cold breath plumes and frosted windows. The sun felt glorious, vibrantly gold.
Mostly though, we were grateful for the diversion of route because it gave us just a bit more time with our new friends, @oneida_journeys. We watched our dogs run and our daughter dance and fixed things and chopped wood and made campfire pizza for dinner. We rolled up our pant legs and sleeves to feel the sun on our wintry skin.
We hated having to leave and turn back east, uncertain of when we will be back or see our friends and the desert again. We miss them and the red rocks already, and soon there will be some two-thousand-and-too-many miles between us and all of it. We are pointed eastward and toward the cold and grey, toward the familiar and the unknown, and all we’ll have of the gold will be held somewhere inside.
