ホァン・ハイシン（黃海欣）（1984年台湾、台北生まれ、ニューヨーク在住） 《サイレント・ナイト》ではツリーが発火していますが、家族はみんな手や腕で顔を隠しています。クリスマスの贈り物を目隠しで待っているようでありながら、現実から目をそらしているようにも見えます。ホァンの絵画には、ありふれた日常を生きる普通の人々の滑稽さが描かれています。往々にして思い描いた理想とはかけ離れたものになってしまう私たちのリアリティを描き出すと同時に、作品に登場する人々の生気のない目は、現代人の抱えるそこはかとない不安を象徴しているようでもあります。

In “Silent Night” a Christmas tree is on fire but all the family members are covering their faces with their hands and arms. Though they appear to be waiting for their Christmas presents blindfolded, they also seem to be looking away from reality. What is depicted in Huang’s paintings is the comical nature of ordinary people living regular everyday lives. She depicts our reality that often turns out to be far from the ideals that we have imagined, and at the same time, the glazed eyes of the figures in her works seem to symbolize the subtle unease of people today.
