Samuel Fuqua was the Lieutenant Commander on the USS Arizona, a vessel heavily bombed in the first wave of the attack on Pearl Harbor. As bombs destroyed most of the ship, Fuqua became the most senior officer aboard the Arizona. He was one of the last people off the ship, having evacuated all remaining sailors. He and other officers then rescued survivors from the burning water and brought them to safety.
