Doris Miller was a ship's cook stationed aboard the USS West Virginia. As the attack on Pearl Harbor began, Miller helped carry wounded sailors to safety, and help load ammunition into one of the ship's 50-caliber machine guns. Eventually, with no formal weapons training, he manned guns and defended the ship from swarming enemy planes.
