On September 2, 1944, Bush piloted one of four Grumman TBM Avengers of VT-51 that attacked Japanese installations on Chichijima. Bush's aircraft was hit during the attack, but he was able to release several bombs as he piloted away from the island, many of them hitting their marks. Bush bailed out and spent four hours adrift on raft before he was rescued by a submarine, the USS Finback. He remained aboard the Finback for a month, helping to rescue other downed aviators.
