George H.W. Bush enlisted in the U.S. Navy on his 18th birthday, six months after the start of WWII. He became a pilot in 1943 and at the time was the youngest pilot flying in the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to Torpedo Squadron 51 aboard the USS San Jacinto. In 1944, he was promoted to Lieutenant and participated in operations against the Japanese in the Bonin Islands.
