Photo by Stephen Alvarez @salvarezphoto | A tourist makes a photograph just before sunrise at Ahu Tongariki on Rapa Nui (Easter Island). Ahu Tongarkiki is the largest ahu or ceremonial platform on Rapa Nui. The original inhabitants of this island erected over 900 of theses huge, enigmatic moai (statues) across the island. By the time of European contact all had been toppled by internal social conflict. Tongariki was further damaged when a 1960 tsunami swept the ahu and its statues inland. @ナショナルジオグラフィック grantees Cladio Cristino and Patricia Vargas carried out a 5 year excavation and restoration project to rebuild the platform and erect the statues. Tongariki is now one of the largest tourist draws on the island and any clear morning people flock to the site to watch sunrise behind the moai. It is an awe inspiring sight.
