In Antarctica, unlike the Arctic, seals were never hunted, and the fear of humans is not imprinted in their DNA, both underwater or on the ice floe. In Antarctica seal pups are both curious and shy, but do not swim away, so a face-to-face could last until I forget the pain of the icy water. This photo was taken in 2015, during the Gombessa III Expedition initiated by @lucjacquet. We were ascending up to the ice ceiling when this young one came timidly toward us. It seems that in the waters of this virgin continent free of human civilization, this continent of peace and science, even the mothers let go of their protective instinct and let their pups explore and come close to divers.
