Photo by @Joel Sartore | The largest of the anteater species, the giant anteater is about the size of a golden retriever and has been roaming the Earth for 25 million years. Native to Central and South America, it is estimated that only 5,000 giant anteaters remain in the wild, with habitat loss, hunting, and vehicle collisions posing major threats. A project in Brazil, @bandeiraserodovias, is hard at work conducting road surveys to assess the impact of encounters between giant anteaters and vehicles. Reflective tape used on anteater tracking collars is one method that appears to be working well so far, but continued monitoring will help researchers to develop long-term solutions to save this species in the wild. #giantanteater #anteatersandhighways #PhotoArk #SaveTogether
