Photo by Daniella Zalcman @dzalcman | Salish and Kootenai youth gathered on the Flathead Reservation a couple weeks ago for an annual hunting camp in western Montana. Over the course of the week, the teens go out with experienced hunters who serve as guides and learn how to hunt, skin, clean, cut, and smoke the deer (and if they're lucky, elk) they find. The gathering is rooted in preserving and passing on Native traditions, from the early morning dip they take in the Flathead River before the hunt to telling stories about their adventures around the fire every evening. At the end of the week, the smoked deer meat is distributed to members of the community.
