In @tmagazine | Last April, @kendricklamar won the @pulitzerprizes for music. At the ceremony, the prize’s administrator, Dana Canedy, greeted Kendrick on the steps of @columbia. “We’re both making history right now,” she said. And so they were: Dana is the first black woman to hold her post, and “Pulitzer Kenny” — as he now calls himself — is the first hip-hop artist to win the award. On the same day, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins was nominated for the prize for drama. What’s striking about this, Ayana Mathis says, “is the intense focus on works by African-American men in America’s artistic landscape, even as the problems of race and racial violence continue to plague the nation.” As attention to gifted black male authors has grown in the last decade, Ayana asks, “How are we to reconcile these truths?
