The Shetland Islands, the Scottish archipelago across from Norway, is the birthplace of Fair Isle #knitting. It’s a type of colorwork that can be seen in traditional sweaters, and is named after the most remote of the islands. Knitting is a tradition that is rooted in #Shetland history. @nellie.hermann wrote about attending @shetlandwoolweek for @nytimestravel. What she found, she writes, “was a place with a complex history beyond that of the knitting industry, difficult to get to but well worth the journey.” There are about 100 islands in the archipelago, only 16 of which are inhabited. In a place as small and remote as Shetland, the growing resurgence of interest in knitting worldwide — and, subsequently, in festivals like this one — is helping to bring textiles back into the picture as a player in the economy, just like it used to be.
