Rosalía Vila Tobella is ripping up the #flamenco rule book and writing her own version. Her take on the traditional genre is credited with refreshing flamenco for a new generation. Instead of wearing the long skirts and heeled shoes associated with Spain’s folkloric style of music and dance, she recently went onstage wearing sneakers and a rose-red bodysuit. She was flanked by a dance squad and, during one solo, the synthetic echo of Auto-Tune could be heard. In Rosalía’s performances, modernity pixelates tradition. Along the way, she has become one of the rare contemporary artists in Spain who has made an impact outside of the country, with her album “El Mal Querer” earning worldwide acclaim and catching the eye of producers like @ファレル・ウィリアムス. Some flamenco purists, however, are none too pleased with her innovation. @gtripodo took this photo of @rosalia.vt. Visit the link in our profile to see more.
