Yayoi Kusama, raised in wartime Japan, moved to the United States as a young and already successful artist, seeking the freedom of postwar New York. “No. 2. J.B.” (1960), part of Kusama’s “Infinity Nets” series invites reflection and redefines conceptions of space and time. Impressive in physical presence and visual impact, the work displays Kusama’s lifelong obsession with the concept of infinity and exemplifies the artist’s use of painting to achieve her vision of an alternate universe of infinity.
