Judge Brett Kavanaugh will soon be Justice Brett Kavanaugh. But the consequences of his Senate confirmation to the Supreme Court on Oct. 6 will be analyzed for years to come. Senators voted 50-48 to place Kavanaugh, a jurist who in recent weeks has faced multiple accusations of sexual misconduct, on the nation's highest court following one of the most contentious confirmation battles in recent history. The vote was often interrupted by protesters, causing Vice President Mike Pence, who was presiding, to call for order. Protesters also descended on the Capitol to express their dissatisfaction. Chief Justice John Roberts and retired Justice Anthony Kennedy—whose seat Kavanaugh will take—will swear him in on Saturday. In a tweet, President Trump called the whole thing "Very exciting!"
