Before that it was always just a ride on a Staten Island ferry to see the Statue of Liberty and turn back around. But Staten Island is home to one of the biggest Sri Lankan communities in America and many are Christian.
Last December, I attended a Christmas celebration organized by the Sri Lankan community in Staten Island, New York for my @ナショナルジオグラフィック story on South Asian Americans. The Tamil carol service has taken place for more than 30 years, bringing together Christians, Hindus, and others. During the dinner, I got some time to speak to a few of young Sri Lankan-Americans. Some aren’t Christian but come every year to celebrate with their community. It has become a tradition for them. #southasians #srilanka #aapi
