Did you know that most species of foxes have vertically slit pupils and there is a very good reason for it ? Foxes are real survivors. One of the reasons for this is they are well adapted to be successful in a variety of conditions. It has been known for quite some time that foxes have vertically slit pupils but the reason for it was not known. Scientists have recently shed some light on this topic. It turns out the the ratio on the widest opening to the narrowest opening of the pupil can be far greater with a slit pupil than a round pupil. For instance the pupil area of a fox can change by a factor of 135 whereas the round pupil in a human can only change by a factor of 15. This gives the fox the ability to see well in varied light conditions. Another advantage this pupil shape gives foxes is the ability to focus on and determine the distance to prey at very short distances. Since foxes are ambush predators this is a useful ability. Foxes are truly poetry in motion on every level.
