Did you know foxes are the most successful canid? That is if we don’t consider Domestic dogs. Dogs, after all, had a bit of help from a certain upright walking primate they met up with 10s of thousands of years ago. The dogs clearly thought these creatures had promise as they formed a partnership that has been of great benefit to both species. One of the reasons foxes are so successful, is they are designed to function effectively in a wide variety of environments. A particularly interesting adaptation is their ability to “see” magnetic fields. Researchers have found that when foxes pounce on prey they can hear, but can not see, they usually do so in a north east orientation or more specifically 20 degrees from north. It is believed their ability to sense magnetic fields increases their ability to determine the exact distance to the prey before they initiate their pounce. True animal magnetism.
