For the seated, candlelight dinner following the 50th Anniversary Show, two rows of 30-foot tables punctuated by canvas umbrellas formed a semicircle around Bethesda Fountain in Central Park.

The statue at the center of the fountain was New York City’s first major public work commissioned from a female artist, Emma Stebbins. Completed in 1873, “Angel of the Waters” was the only sculpture included in the park’s original plans. Stebbins designed the eight-foot bronze angel as a symbol of healing commemorating the opening of an aqueduct that provided safe water to the people of New York City. The angel carries a lily in one hand, representing purity, and gestures to the fountain below with the other.
