In his late watercolors, #WilliamTrostRichards returned to landscapes and the tree and rock formations that captivated him early in his career, but with an increasingly bold and expressive approach. In Landscape with Fence, he left a large portion of unpainted paper exposed in the foreground, contributing to the painting’s spontaneous quality. Similarly, Study of Rocks shows a looser, more rapid handling that departs from the hyperdetailed and exacting techniques that Richards practiced in gouache before 1875.
