In the postwar period #ConeyIsland remained an almost obligatory subject for most photographers visiting or living in New York. Brooklyn-born Stephen Salmieri had just graduated from School of Visual Arts in New York when he started his Coney Island series in 1966 and spent the following six years documenting a decaying area, still full of life. No better way to wrap up our #SummerFridays series than with Salmieri’s portraits of local characters that make Coney Island the special place it was, and still is today.⠀
