There is a small fox species that only lives on tiny islands off the coast of California. It is fittingly called the Island fox. These foxes were likely brought to these islands thousands of years ago by Native Americans. Once there they quickly adapted to island life getting smaller than their mainland relative the grey fox. This process is called insular dwarfism. They lived on these islands for thousands of years in balance with nature. This was until the use of DDT by man killed off the island’s Bald Eagle population. This allowed Golden Eagle numbers to soar, killing many of the island foxes and putting them at risk of extinction. The reintroduction of Bald Eagles and elimination of DDT put nature back in balance and Island Fox numbers have started to increase. This could be a success story for wildlife conservation.
