This express bus travels about 40 miles. When our reporter Winne Hu and the photographer @hollypickettpix went along for the ride, the trip took nearly 3 hours. “When people’s eyebrows go up, we tell them you could fly to Florida in less time,” said Tony Ventimiglia, a bus dispatcher. “And you certainly can.” The X17 bus links Staten Island to Midtown Manhattan. Its leisurely path underscores the inefficient and outdated bus network that crisscrosses NYC, the largest municipal bus system in the U.S. Mounting frustrations have led to a bus crisis, sending riders fleeing to the equally failing subway and onto crowded roads. Now, transit officials are launching an ambitious plan to make bus commutes more bearable. 300 bus routes will be untangled in a complete overhaul of the system. But NYC isn’t the first city revamp its bus routes. Houston unveiled the first redesigned bus system in 2015, followed by similar efforts in Austin, Texas; Columbus, Ohio; Baltimore, Maryland; and Richmond, Virginia. In New York, the first phase of a new system has been unveiled on Staten Island. Visit the link in our profile to read more. #?
