Last August, hundreds of Rohingya were slaughtered in Chut Pyin, a village in Myanmar. Mohammad Hossain, who now lives in this refugee camp in Bangladesh, was there as the attack unfolded. He said he knows the man who helped soldiers seize his Rohingya neighbors and “cut them into pieces.” It was the same man, he said, who locked him in a dungeon, burned his legs with a hot metal rod and shoved needles under his fingernails. Nearly 2 dozen Rohingya Muslim refugees shared similar stories with our reporter @mschwirtz. They detailed years of oppression and abuse that culminated in the mass slaughter of Rohingya in Chut Pyin on August 27 last year. One man above all, they say, is responsible: They know where he lives, they know his cellphone number. He wasn’t a soldier, but their neighbor. And there is little sign he will ever face punishment. A year after Myanmar’s military began its broader campaign of ethnic cleansing against the #Rohingya — burning villages, killing thousands and forcing hundreds of thousands to flee to Bangladesh, where @adrianeohanesian took this photo — there has been almost no progress in holding anyone accountable.
