Most of the time, you probably don’t notice background music in a place like New York City. It’s a bit like light or temperature — part of the atmosphere of daily life. It’s also, by its nature, ephemeral; you’d be unlikely to hear the same sounds at Penn Station from one day to the next. But we did our best to capture a sonic portrait of the city. Swipe left on @rdegive’s photographs to listen. ? Outside of AA Electronics & Appliances in the South Bronx, the music pulsates down the block on a Sunday near the 149th Street-Grand Concourse subway station. ? At #GrandCentral, Tom Swafford cuts through the din of a train station with his violin. “I know that people kind of are affected by it,” he said. ? You’ll hear a kind of chill that’s synonymous with climbing at @brooklynboulders, a climbing gym in Gowanus. On Mondays, they’ve instituted Vinyl Night, encouraging climbers to bring in their own records. ? And Bemelmans Bar, a landmark in @thecarlylehotel, is famous for its live piano music. But midday, when the bar is quiet and the piano stands empty, you’ll hear instrumental jazz. It’s not quiet, per se, but it melds seamlessly with the surroundings.
