#SpeakingInDance | “The rumba makes us feel sexy,” said the ballroom dancer @ernestoapc. “It’s soft. It’s a little more flirty.” As his partner, @nikolai.shpakov, said, “It’s the dance of love.” Ernesto (with darker hair), raised an eyebrow and added with a laugh: “And hate.” Featured in Gail Freedman’s documentary @Hottotrotfilm, at the @quadcinema through August 30 and in Los Angeles in September, these dancers — not a couple in real life — show how competitive ballroom dance is enhanced, not diminished, by same-sex partnering. Ernesto, a former drug addict from Costa Rica, and Nikolai, a Russian who suppressed his sexual identity for years, were champions of mainstream ballroom — with female partners — before they joined forces to form a super duo. They no longer compete together, but their dancing has a lasting allure: Ernesto’s silky sensuality contrasts with Nikolai’s more commanding precision. In same-sex ballroom, there is no designated leader or follower; the dancers take turns. “It’s unexpected,” Ernesto told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “And it makes it more engaging with the body and the actions. Who takes whom? Who goes where?
