These #microscopic algae cells, called Thalassionema nitzschoides, make beautiful shapes when they come together. Alone, they look like straight bars, but when they join, they form stars, snowflakes and other zigzag-like designs.
Each individual cell is 10 times thinner than the thinnest strands of hair. Our microbiologists found these in the #ChesapeakeBay, but Thalassionema lives in warm waters all over the world.
Want to see more life under the microscope? Keep following us after this week’s takeover at @SmithsonianEnvironment.
