These adorable cownose rays are some of the most mysterious creatures in the #ChesapeakeBay. Every summer a group of #rays swims into the bay to give birth to their pups and mate, but we don’t know much about their journeys afterwards.
Our team at @SmithsonianEnvironment is tagging them to follow their migrations. Hundreds of receivers along the East Coast can pick up signals from the tags.
In one of their latest discoveries, biologists found that adult #CownoseRays all along the Atlantic migrate to the same spot every winter—just off the coasts of Cape Canaveral, Florida. However, we still don’t know where newborn rays go right after their birth. That’s one of our next projects!
