Before @NASA's #ParkerSolarProbe took off for the sun, our scientists built one of the few things on the spacecraft that will be exposed directly to sunlight.
The Solar Probe Cup will measure ions and electrons in the solar wind, a supersonic stream of particles that flows out from the sun.
In addition to collecting that data, the mission is working toward finding out why the sun's atmosphere is so hot and how the solar wind is being accelerated. It will help us understand how our solar system works and—since our sun is the only star we can visit—how all of the stars in the universe function.
How do you keep it from melting? The team at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory carefully chose materials that could perform at extremely high temperatures. The #SolarProbe Cup is made of Tungsten, Molybdenum, Niobium, Titanium and Sapphire.?
