On the edges of the city are coal burning power and heating plants which add to the terrible pollution during the winter months. As the coldest capital city in the world, there is a need for a lot of heat and power. Adding to the problem are the many people from the countryside who come to Ulaanbaatar and live in Gers or Yurts in the winter months. Small stoves inside the Gers burn coal which contribute to the pollution factor.
