Photo by @chamiltonjames / Charlie Hamilton James - A young male lion known locally as ‘Alan’ lies dying on the plains of the Masai Mara in Kenya. Beyond him stalks a hyena, ready to move in and kill him. The lion was a member of the ‘Marsh Pride’, perhaps the most filmed and photographed lions on earth. The pride was poisoned in retaliation, after they attacked and killed cows belonging to local herders. Pesticides are used as poison across Africa as they are cheap and available. This young lion, weakened by poison, had been attacked the previous night by a herd of buffalo. They severely injured him and punctured one of his lungs. You can see back left the green slither of grass in a ring of mud, where the lion had tried to defend himself against the herd - which you can just see as specks in the background. The lion eventually managed to crawl under the car I was in, to escape the hyena. He stayed there for a few hours until vets arrived. They eventually decided that his injuries were too extensive and put him down. It was a very sad day for all of us who witnessed Alan’s last moments. This shot was taken during coverage of ‘Poisoning Africa’ an article in the August issue of @ナショナルジオグラフィック mag.
