Little Libby Belle is starting the slow adjustment process. She is starting to look to Dave as her safety blanket. The bond between them is forming and we hope that will help enable her to be able to participate in our interactive encounters. So many people ask us about the differences between the #Belyaev #foxes and the US captive bred. Some people also confuse what domestication vs tame means. Or they claim or call their US captive bred foxes “domestic” or “domesticated”. Us captive bred foxes, like Libby, come from generations of being bred in the fur industry. One could call them domesticated for fur. When we use the term domestication in relationship to companion animal or reference to dogs, it means a genetic change that is carried down from generations - and that is related to friendliness towards humans. Recently a paper was published regarding the fox genome and the identification of these domestication genes (Nature Ecology & Evolution). Our Russian foxes are genetically different as a population than the captive bred foxes, as a population. They carry these “domestication” genes and interestingly, there was a larger difference between the “domesticated foxes” vs the ranch raised foxes than from the ranch raised foxes compared to the “aggressive foxes”.
