What color is this butterfly? Though it looks blue, the answer is a bit more complicated. The color of this blue morpho butterfly is due to structural coloration rather than pigment. The wings of this butterfly are actually pigmented brown! This color discrepancy happens because at most angles of light that we can see, all colors in the spectrum are absorbed except blue, which is reflected, making it appear that color. There are several species of morpho butterflies and some are quite rare. All species live in neotropical forests, and those with more specialized habitat needs that live in restricted zones are at higher risk of having populations dip to low levels.
