It's that time of year again—if they haven't already, school bells (modern versions of the bell above) will soon be ringing in your community. Our collections include a wide array of school bells, many of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Swipe through to see their distinctive designs. ?
School bells could send a message even when they didn't make a sound. Bells topped with patriotic symbols (spot the bald eagle?) became very popular in the 1800s, a time when new students—many from immigrant families—were joining American schools. ?
Public schools encouraged the incorporation of newcomers with objects. School supplies sported patriotic images of the U.S. flag, Lady Liberty, and the national bird—symbols that students learning English could easily recognize. ?
Click on the link in our bio to learn more about school bells in our collection, including how one of them sounds when rung! ?
