This slogan-covered wagon helps us understand the life and legacy of Lucy Stone, one of the most important leaders in the American woman's movement. Stone and the suffragists who came after her used the wagon as both as a backdrop at speaking engagements and as an easy way to distribute copies of the "Woman's Journal," the suffrage magazine that Stone founded. ?️ Lucy Stone's career as an activist stretched nearly half a century. Equally dedicated to the causes of abolition and woman suffrage, Stone was one of the organizers of the first National Women’s Rights Convention. In 1869 she founded American Woman Suffrage Association (AWSA). More moderate than Susan B. Anthony's National Woman Suffrage Association, AWSA admitted men as well as women and was committed to passage of the 15th amendment. In 1870, Stone founded the "Woman's Journal" to disseminate information about women’s rights topics. Today would have been Stone's 200th birthday. ?
Before it was transformed into a mobile platform for women's rights, Stone's wagon was most likely used as bakery or milk delivery wagon. It's now on display in our exhibition, "American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith." Which slogan stands out to you?
