Komakusa (Dicentra peregrina), called "Queen of the Alpine Plants" due to the fact that it is found in the gravely sand of high mountains where other plants can't grow, has lovely pink flowers that are loved by many mountain climbers. Because it grows gradually in the harsh environment of the high mountains, the plant takes several years before it becomes large enough to bloom flowers.
At Norikura-tatamidaira (approximate elevation 2,700m or 8,858ft) on Mt. Norikura (elevation 3,026m or 9,928 ft), there are large colonies of komakusa.
Although the viewing season varies somewhat from year to year, the best time is generally from around mid-July to the beginning of August.
