Happy Fourth of July! Have you settled on an outfit for the day ?? Wisconsinite Wilburt E. Leppien first donned this red, white, and blue Uncle Sam costume in 1956. A resident of Madison, Leppien took part in numerous ceremonies and parades across the country—including five presidential inaugurations. During his appearances, Leppien would hand out photo cards to the people he met—swipe right to see what they looked like ?. By the mid-1800s, Uncle Sam had become the most recognizable personification of the U.S. government. Rather than an authority figure, he was usually portrayed with affection and used as an emblem of national kinship to instill patriotism ??. Planning a visit? Leppien’s Uncle Sam costume is now on display in our exhibition, “American Democracy: a Great Leap of Faith" ?. #FourthOfJuly #4thOfJuly #July4th #AmericanHistory #AmericanDemocracy #UncleSam #WisconsinHistory #Madison #HolidayHistory
