On Naples, again. #Sfogliatella comes from the word "peeling" (the word for puff pastry is also "sfoglia"). Thousands of buttery layers flake off with each bite you take into the crunchy pastry. Sweet, fragrant, hot ricotta cream oozes off to your mouth and suddenly you're taken away from the sketchy-ish streets near the main the station to somewhere far away. The truth is that — protest all you want if you should — la sfogliatella smells and tastes like the middle east; the orange blossom scent, the candied fruit and the cinnamon combo belongs as much to Napoleatan sfogliatella as to the streets of Aleppo, Beirut, Basra or Shiraz. This classic pastry in its rich, sweet crunchiness is a lesson in history, migration and mingling. Something to celebrate rather than to be scared of. .
The first stop you MUST make as soon as arrive to Naples's station is Attanasio; the humble, historical bakery that serves the best sfogliatelle in town. That's what we did on out culinary tour last with @casamiaitalyfoodandwine. The best start for a delicious day trip.
