While the four large wooden cubicles in Adrian Piper’s “Vote/Emote” allude to voting booths, the visitor who enters them is given not a list of candidates but an opportunity to privately and anonymously respond to personal psychological questions. In each booth an image of African or African-American people, including Civil Rights-era protestors, provides historical and affective context to participants encouraging them to consider the implications of responses in regard to race relations. Now on view in our #AdrianPiper exhibition.
