I photographed this young Kayapo woman on the first day I arrived at her village in a remote corner of the Amazon. I was fascinated by the beautiful markings on her face and by her proud and fierce demeanour. She didn’t know me and I thought her look was a little defiant when I first pointed my camera at her. I spent several weeks in her village and within a few days I got to know her much better. I learned that in addition to being beautiful and very capable at the difficult job of surviving and raising a family in a remote corner of the rainforest, she is also hardworking, and a leader among the women in her village. Being invited into the lives of communities is a rare privilege and one of the best aspects of my work. I try to share the story of people who still live so close to the earth and who are amazing stewards of the ecosystems from which they depend to survive. To even think that some candidates to Brazil’s presidency are proposing stripping indigenous people of their ancestral territorial lands to make way for development is horrifying but it is actually happening.
