At over 36,000 years old, the paintings in Chauvet rank as some of the oldest on earth. Regardless of its antiquity the Lion Panel of Chauvet is certainly one of the most spectacular pieces of paleolithic art. Standing in front of the painting I had the most peculiar feeling of time slipping away and the artist talking to me across an unimaginable gulf of time. Images have power and part of that power comes from their incredible ability to bridge all manner of cultural divide. I don't know what the artists who painted the Lion Panel meant with their composition. But clearly it was something important enough to travel over a kilometer underground and record on stone. 
The experience of standing before these paintings led me to start the @ancientartarchive
It is a nonprofit that explores and preserved humanity's oldest stories.
