A Blacktip Reef Shark swims through the surf zone on uninhabited Millennium Atoll near the Southern Line Islands in the Central South Pacific. The pristine waters surrounding the Southern Line Islands harbor some of the most ecologically diverse marine life in the world.
Thanks to the efforts of National Geographic’s Pristine Seas Project, the area is now protected by the Government of Kiribati. The project works to protect ocean ecosystems from marine pollution, overfishing, sea temperature rise, acidification, and invasive species.
