Did you know the popular, colorful patterns on these coats had their start in 19th-century Central Asia? “Ikat,” derived from the Malaysian word for “to tie,” refers to the technique used to make them.
Bundles of threads are painstakingly patterned through binding and dyeing up to six times before they’re woven into a textile. In 19th-century Uzbekistan, a boldly patterned ikat robe signaled a person’s rank and wealth, and was often worn for a special occasion or celebration. The first coat, a woman’s robe, dates back to Central Asia from 1850 to 1875.
Not surprisingly, ikats caught the attention of contemporary designers, most notably Oscar de la Renta. He included ikat designs in his collections, such as his silk and cotton trench coat from 2005 (swipe to see). Today, ikat motifs can be found everywhere—from gowns to T-shirts, sofa cushions to shower curtains.
You can learn more about ikats past and present in “#ToDyeFor: Ikats from Central Asia,” on view at the Freer|Sackler until July 29, and by following us at @freersackler.
Do you have a favorite ikat-inspired item in your wardrobe or your home? We’d love to see it! Post a photo with the hashtag #ShareYourIkats.
