This week we’re celebrating work in the galleries made by artists when they were aged 16-25.

Picasso painted Girl in a Chemise in Paris when he was 25 years old. X-radiography and infrared imaging used to look beneath the surface of the painting revealed that Picasso in fact transformed an earlier painting of a boy to create this profile of a young woman with a few deft brushstrokes. The painting marks a moment of transition in Picasso’s early work, from the dark misery of the ‘blue period’ to the reintroduction of colour and lightening of subject matter known as the ‘rose period’.
