Oshima-zakura are wild cherry blossoms said to have originated in the Izu Islands.
They are persistent to the salty sea breeze and can grow along the coast.
Leaves sprout at the same time as the flowers bloom, therefore the Oshima-zakura will always be in the state of "hazakura"—a Japanese term describing cherry blossom trees in bloom with emerging leaves, which is usually a goodbye signal of the flowering season for many cherry blossoms.
The blossoms are large, single-layered and white, beautifully painting the mountain surface of Izu Oshima Island during the flowering season in March.
