The Statue of Maidens was sculpted by Kotaro Takamura, a Japanese poet and sculptor, in 1953 to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Towada National Park's designation (which merged Hachimantai Area in 1938 and changed its name to Towada-Hachimantai National Park). The model of the statue is said to be Kotaro Takamura's beloved wife. Facing one another, the two maidens depict the mirror lake surface of Lake Towada.
