Photo by @paolowoods - A couple of young boys at near Momi. It is often said that the Socotri (inhabitants of Socotra) are very different then the mainland Yemeni. They have their own language, their own culture and different features. Socotri claim that the light eyes of some of them dispend directly from the different invaders (Portuguese, Austrian, British) that ruled the island over time. Socotra is a small island in the Indian Ocean that is part of Yemen. It is far from the main land (about 350 Km) and that has contributed to its historic and biological isolation over the years resulting in an amazing endemic fauna and flora. Surveys have revealed that more than a third of the 800 or so plant species of Socotra are found nowhere else.
It has been till recently a Yemeni military base, were access was very restricted, and this has contributed to preserve it from any kind of mass tourism. But the immense beauty of the mountainous landscape, the stunning variety of the underwater life, the pristine beaches and uniqueness of its flora are making it a sought-after ecotourism destination. #socotra #yemen #momi #boys #indianocean
