Image by @Joel Sartore | Fennec foxes like this one at the @STLzoo are the smallest foxes in the world, but they have the largest ears relative to their body size. In the hot north African desert, those ears help the foxes shed body heat. Blood circulates close to the bare surface of the ears and is cooled in that way. Of course, they’re also helpful in tracking prey or listening for danger.
Like other desert animals, the fennec fox sleeps underground all day. It can dig a burrow very quickly. When it’s cool at night they hunt for small rodents, ground-nesting birds, bird eggs, lizards and insects. These foxes have pale coats which blend in with the desert sand and doesn’t absorb as much of the sun's rays as a dark coat would. They also have fur between their foot pads so they can painlessly walk on hot desert sand.
The Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute, Sahara Wildlife Recovery Center, along with the Sahara Conservation Fund and other partners are currently working to help animals like the fennec fox in the Sahelo-Saharan region of North and West Africa.
