“‘Mlle Bourgeois Noire’ is a 1980-1 performance by Lorraine O'Grady. French for "Miss Black Middle-Class", O'Grady created this fictional persona in response to segregation in feminism and the art world. It was also a critique of fellow African-American artists she thought were compromising themselves to be accepted. Dressed in a costume made from 180 white dinner gloves, O'Grady stormed exhibitions while reciting poems and whipping herself. The work illustrates how gender, race, and class are inextricably linked parts of identity that cannot be considered in isolation.”—Curatorial Assistant Sewon Kang
