Michelangelo was known to have been reluctant to make portrait drawings unless for close friends – he once said his drawings were made ‘for love rather than duty’. This fine chalk portrait from 1530 depicts Andrea Quaratesi, a well-dressed young man from Florentine nobility. Here the shadows are carefully created by small, parallel strokes of chalk – zoom to see more detail! It’s thought that Michelangelo may have taught the young Andrea how to draw – a note by the artist on a different drawing remarks ‘Andrea, have patience’.
